Applying Patches with Heat Activated Adhesive

Dual Heated Platen Hat Press:

No Pre-press required if you follow the below instructions.

  1.  Set bottom platen to 320 °F and top platen to 280 °F
  2.  We like to use a heat gun to "activate the adhesive on the back of the patch and warm patch slightly on low to medium heat for 3-5 seconds until adhesive is tacky.
  3. Place patch on hat or apparel to your desired location.
  4. Cover the patch and crown of the hat with silicone pad and press for 30-40 seconds. (Not all heat presses are the same. So, you will have to dial in your own settings.
  5. Allow to cool to room temperature before testing adhesion. 
  6. Optional: Sew on patch for durable retail-ready bond.

Single Heated Platen Hat or Flat Press (This can be tricky, but can be done):

  1.  Set top platen to 280 °F- 300 °F
  2.  We like to use a heat gun to "activate the adhesive on the back of the patch and warm patch slightly on low to medium heat for 3-5 seconds until adhesive is tacky.
  3. Place patch on hat or apparel to your desired location.
  4. Cover the patch and crown of the hat with silicone pad and press for 30-40 seconds. (Not all heat presses are the same. So, you will have to dial in your own settings.
  5. Allow to cool to room temperature before testing adhesion.
  6. Using light pressure and upper platen's heat setting now turned off, press for additional 15-20 seconds. This step may need to be repeated 2-3 times to ensure complete adhesion.
  7. Allow to cool to room temperature before testing adhesion.
  8. Optional: Sew on patch for durable retail-ready bond.
